Sunday 15 November 2015

Since I started this blog, in June 2014, I have stated, probably over-stated, my case against school as we know it.  Change does happen slowly, but at the moment the system is heading speedily in the wrong direction.
I have repeated myself too many times, and as such, I have decided to give the blog a rest for a while.  I would rather add a post when I feel inspired to do so, rather than adding a post 'religiously' every Sunday.
I could extend the scope of my blog, which I may well do and soon.  Any feedback about this would be welcome.
In the meantime, for all those interested in real education, I recommend that you read the following:
Ivan Illich, John Holt, Bruno Bettelheim, Bertrand Russell, Homer Lane, A.S.Neill, Sir Kenneth Robinson, and John Taylor Gatto.  These wise minds have been largely ignored by governments and cultures around the world.  So what's new?  Whenever have great minds been heeded and acted upon by history?  All too rarely.

  1. It may be that one is provoked into challenging that which one realizes is right: but perhaps not as right as the author cogently asserts. Mr Nance is very articulate. He pens his arguments with a degree of arrogance, and there is nothing wrong with arrogance if one knows what one is talking about, as I heard Roman Polanski remark.
But sometimes what Mr Nance says seems almost too good to be true. One wants to give it a good bash, like a Knight in armour bashing a shield, just to see if one can make a dent and get the clever bastard on the run! Then again it may be that one smells a whiff of idealism emanating from an ivory tower. Governments, of whatever hue, driven by ideology, rile one’s realistic idea of what is or isn’t possible.
Nevertheless, this blog has been hard to challenge. One has rushed at it desperate to make a dent. Mr Nance has, week after week, thrown down the gauntlet, and far too few have picked it up. This is the tragedy of blogs. One has to be a star before anyone is interested in reading one’s views. This may be the way of the world, but it is insidious because one may be influenced by someone just because they are famous in another sphere. The airing of opinion is akin to hanging white sheets on a line. How crisp and clean they may look! But are they the right size for the bed?
I look forward to reading more from Mr Nance when he feels inspired to post, and I shall no doubt be reaching for my spiked ball on a chain. In the meantime I may not, I have to admit, seek out the material he urges us to read. This will not be because I do not think those authors have anything to say. That would be very far from the truth.
“Change”, concedes Mr Nance, “does happen slowly, but at the moment the system is heading speedily in the wrong direction.” That, indeed, is hard to deny, however frantically one may seek to do so.
